Abstract

This article discusses the practice of storytelling within the context of early childhood education. Its primary objective is to highlight the importance of telling and listening to stories as an enjoyable activity that contributes to child development. Furthermore, it examines the origins of storytelling, the role of the storyteller, and the evolution of children's storytelling in Brazil—from its beginnings to the present day—as well as the teacher's role in shaping children into future readers. This study employed bibliographic research as its methodology, drawing on specialized literature by authors who view storytelling as an essential resource for child development. Based on the data collected, it can be concluded that storytelling in early childhood education is a vital pedagogical practice; it stimulates children's imaginations and the formation of ideas, fosters an interest in and enjoyment of reading, provides opportunities for creativity and self-expression, and expands their worldview.
